Something a Bit Different…

I’ve just got back from the Museum Freelance Network conference in Manchester where Esme Ward of Manchester Museum taked about pursuing the things that “make your heart beat faster”.

As a freelancer for over 10 years now, it can be easy to get bogged down and not leaving yourself with any time for reflection and planning, lurching from one project to another.

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough paint a mural for one of my favourite clients, Burghley House in Stamford. I’d done some similar (much smaller), similar things before but nothing on this scale (5.5m x just under 3m) and with this level of detail.

Painting this mural was challenging, exhausting, asbsorbing and absolutely amazing. I could have made things easier for myself with a simpler design, but it became an absolute labour of love.

Painting this mural certainly made my heart beat faster. I would love to do more work like this. Get in touch if you have any ideas or opportunities!

Butterflies, Birds and Beetles Nature Trail

Illustrated children's trail of a park, nature-themed map trail by illustrator Emma Metcalfe
Side 1

Here’s a new children’s trail leaflet design for Gunnersbury Park in London. The brief was to produce a park trail to encourage families to explore the parkland. The trail is map-based and encourages families to do a different activity at various locations around the park. The trail encourages families to spot birds and insects and emphasises that most insects are beneficial in the garden.

The activities on the reverse  can be completed at home or in the café. I always try to make sure all my puzzles and activities are relevant to the site and educational. I really enjoy projects that focus on wildlife and conservation and encouraging children (and their parents) to care about wildlife and take action to help.

You can download a PDF version of the Butterflies, Beetles and Birds children’s trail here.

Keeping busy!

Sorry for the long silence on the blog front. It’s because these days I am normally too busy drawing!

Here’s a sneak peak at at work in progress, a wonderful Redwing feasting on hawthorn berries (I saw my first ever Redwing this winter).

colourful simple hand drawn cartoon illustration of a redwing bird by children's educational wildlife illustrator emma metcalfeI’m also working on Lazy Lords and Poor Old Peasants: a new children’s guidebook for Oakham Castle, lots of lovely illustrations of puffins and pufflings for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, a whole set of new children’s trails for Scarborough Museums, a new children’s trail for The Eling Experience and a project with my good old friends at Castle Howard. I’ve also got several other really interesting projects in the pipeline, so 2018 is shaping up to be a great (but very busy) year.

Illustrated map of Colchester Cemetery

Bespoke illustrated hand drawn map of Colchester Cemetery showing wildlife species living there by map illustrator Emma Metcalfe
Large format illustrated visitor map for A1 sign boards

Here is my new visitor map for Colchester Cemetery. The client required a bespoke map which would appeal to both casual visitors walking in the area and also those making a special trip to visit the grave of a loved one.

The map needed to be flexible enough to be used in a variety of ways – on large format A1 sign boards, as A4 visitor handouts and also on Colchester Borough Council’s website.

The large format version includes a small selection of many wildlife species that live in the cemetery, including Mutjac deer, woodpeckers, bats and owls.
